Dr. Samuel M. Cooper, Executive Pastor

Except for the four years of his seminary education, Sam spent his entire life in South Carolina before moving to Nashville in 2010.  In addition to cities with more conventional names, Sam has lived in Ninety Six, Due West, Clio and Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

Sam is a graduate of Greenwood High School, Erskine College (AB), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and Columbia Theological Seminary (D. Min.).  He received his education at the feet of all the saints, and the sinners, of those with whom he has shared life over the years.

Sam served his Lord as pastor, college chaplain and executive presbyter/stated clerk before accepting the call as Executive Pastor at FPC.  His ministry, which began in two churches in rural South Carolina, like a country song, has brought him to Music City.

While church administration may not sound like ministry to many, Sam notes that “administer” is based on the same Latin root as “minister.”  He views the purpose of his ministry at FPC as making other forms of ministry possible.

Sam once named his boat “Sea What Happens” as a way of expressing his belief that life is full of surprises, and our willingness to accept surprises is one way of expressing our faith.

Sam enjoys technology but doesn’t blog because he has pretty much said everything he has to say.
