New to FPC

At first glance, First Presbyterian Church of Nashville may seem a large, sprawling place. Yes, the campus is large and finding your destination may take a little bit of research, but those new to the church — of every age and every stage of life — will find a caring group of inquiring Christians and a variety of programs that fit the needs of individuals and families.

The pastors, staff and congregation of FPC welcome those new to the church, whether you are visiting for a Sunday worship service or are attending one of the many classes offered here. We want you to feel at home and will do our best to help you find your place at the church.

On Sunday mornings you can follow the smell of coffee and donuts to find Courtenay Hall below the sanctuary. Along with the coffee and donuts you will find our Welcome Desk which is manned from 9:20-9:50 Sunday mornings and ready to answer questions from visitors and members alike.

Worship with Us

The heartbeat of First Presbyterian Church’s family is the worship of Almighty God. We hold traditional worship services Sundays at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. For Easter and Christmas services we worship at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.

You will find men usually wearing suits or sport coats and women in dresses, skirts or slacks. While some families sit in the same general area of the sanctuary, we do not have reserved family pews. Please join us and sit wherever you feel most comfortable.

Worship is our response to what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. Our worship services are rooted in the Reformed tradition, Biblical in shape and substance and centered in the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ. Sunday mornings, we have choirs for children of all ages and two adult choirs that lead us in singing praise to God in our worship services.

The basic order of our services remains largely the same each week, yet within that familiar framework there is variety and innovation. Presbyterian worship seeks to express something of the majesty and wonder of God, drawing from 2,000 years of rich traditions of Christian worship and liturgy. Our services, through praise, prayer, song, sermon and sacrament (baptism and communion), seek to worship God with the dignity and reverence due to Him, and yet to do so with the warmth and joy that Jesus Christ brings to life. We trust that you can find a place in the rich and varied worship life of our church family.

Sunday mornings from 9:45-10:45 A.M. are bustling with opportunities for all ages to experience God’s Word and the Christian life. We invite you — adults, young adults, youth and children — to join us for Sunday School.

Classes, Groups & Studies

Adult Sunday School

In a large church such as ours, a Sunday School class offers a great opportunity to develop friendships and enjoy Christian community. Our adult Sunday morning program includes a variety of regular classes in a wide range of sizes, formats and content. Leadership consists of church staff, church members and professional guests.

See the descriptions of the adult Sunday School classes on the Adult Sunday School webpage. Visitors are always welcome. If you would appreciate assistance or have questions on Sunday morning, Courtenay Hall is the place to go. Located below the sanctuary, you can follow the smell of coffee and donuts to find greeters in the hallway and the Welcome Desk inside Courtenay Hall.

For questions about any of our Adult Education offerings please contact Dr. Stuart Gordon at sgordon@fpcnashville.org for assistance.

Inquirers' ClassInquirers’ Class

We offer two formats: A one-day Saturday class from 8am-1pm or a 4 week one-hour class during our Sunday School hour.  The class is designed for members and prospective members alike who are interested in learning about the history, beliefs, ministries and mission of FPC and the Presbyterian (USA) denomination. Persons considering membership are encouraged but not required to take the Inquirers’ Class before joining the church. We offer the class four times a year. If you have questions or are interested in the class, contact Julia Wilk at jwilk@fpcnashville.org or (615) 298-9509.

Young Adults

First Presbyterian Church is enthusiastic about ministry for and with young adults. Whether you’re studying or working, single, newly married or starting a family, there’s a place here for you. Young adults at FPC are engaged in worship, learning, service and fellowship, and FPC currently offers Young Adult Sunday School classes.

Youth

We have an amazing group of teenagers and Youth Leaders at First Presbyterian Church. The keystone of our Youth Ministry is found in our emphasis on empowering families and connecting students to an extended Christian family in the church.

All of our youth and youth leaders meet in The Gathering Place at 9:40 A.M. on Sunday morning for praise, prayer, fun and announcements. We then adjourn to grade-level classes for Sunday School with a “home-grown” curriculum, covering everything from the patriarchs to peer pressure. An energetic team of adults who love Jesus Christ and love kids teach our classes. Once a month, all youth meet together on Sunday morning for worship, games and a lesson led by staff.

Children’s Sunday School

Sunday School is an important part of our children’s ministry! Each week at 9:45 A.M. we gather for fellowship, fun and learning. Each Sunday School class is a caring community that does Bible study, prayer, worship, mission, service and many other Christian practices together.

Children meet in their peer-groups, based on their age by August 15th. Our 4th, 5th and 6th grade groups operate with a small-group model, to build deeper relationships and community on Sunday mornings.

See our Life Stages main page for more information about each age group. You can also visit the News page for a list of age-level blogs, containing special announcements, stories and upcoming events.

See you on Sunday!

Nursery

Our Nursery provides a safe, nurturing environment for your child. Nursery is provided 8:15 A.M.-12:15 P.M. on Sundays and 5:45-7:30 P.M. on Wednesdays, as well as during most special worship services and many church events. Our dedicated staff realizes that you are allowing us to care for your greatest treasure. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you! We wish to provide your children with an atmosphere of comfort and security while they are in our care. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mallory Hammond, mhammond@fpcnashville.org or (615) 298- 9582.

Mid-Week at FPC

The earliest church, as Luke summarizes it, not only studied together, but built friendships, ate together, and worshiped together.

Practically every day of the week, some group is meeting in the morning, evening, or at lunch for prayer and study. All groups welcome newcomers.

Search the list of weekday groups for a group that might be right for you.

The congregation gathers on Wednesday evenings from early September through early May. Wednesdays are not just for classes, though, which include Bible and Christian beliefs, as well as interesting electives. In addition, we feature an adult computer class, groups for support through grief and divorce, and fellowship groups. Children enjoy music and spiritual formation activities, and nursery care is available for children age 3 and younger.

Wednesdays begin with a buffet-style meal together in Courtenay Hall at 5:00 P.M. Classes and events for all ages are 6:00 P.M.
