Acolytes

For as long as people have been worshipping in churches, there have been acolytes who have prepared these sacred spaces and assisted the clergy before, during, and after the services. Here at First Presbyterian, we believe that children and youth are integral to our congregation. Because of that, we seek to involve congregants of all ages in worship as a continual reminder of the essential roles children and youth offer the body of Christ. As an acolyte, children and youth are part of the worship team: the clergy, choir, musicians, readers, and intercessors, who, together with the entire congregation, join in worshipping God.

What is an Acolyte?

The word acolyte is derived from the Greek word akolouthos, meaning companion, attendant, or helper: a follower. The acolyte ministry has its roots in the Old Testament of the Bible, where the prophet Samuel is seen assisting Eli, the Levite priest, and Elisha is seen assisting Elijah the Prophet. Today, acolytes continue to assist the pastor through their service in lighting candles and other duties as necessary. They are important participants in worship and perform vital tasks.

Acolyte Roles

  • Crucifer (or Cross Bearer) – the person who holds the cross and leads the procession at the beginning of the service.
  • Beadle (or Bible Bearer) – the person who carries the Bible in the procession and places it on the communion table.

Join the A-Team

  • The Acolyte program (the A-Team) runs September (Kickoff Sunday) through May (Kirkin Sunday)
  • Age of Acolytes: 5th Graders and older (must be able carry a heavy Bible and cross)
  • Training sessions are held annually to orient Acolytes
