Glorifying God with a tradition of musical excellence

About

The Music Ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville glorifies God with a tradition of musical excellence in worship, education, and outreach.

Worship is the primary task of the Christian church, the central gathering of the community of faith for repentance, forgiveness, proclamation, service, and celebration. As Presbyterians, we believe that only our best should be offered to God. This tradition commands us to prepare for worship with materials of the highest possible quality.

First Presbyterian Church has a long and distinguished tradition of musical excellence in worship. Our music ministry, which is open to all, has grown and prospered with a strong classically oriented program. We offer music that engages the mind, touches the heart, and opens the worshiper to encounter God. Our program includes music of the 21st century as well as music that speaks of our Christian tradition and heritage. We seek to offer the best of contemporary experiences, in the classical tradition.

The music ministry includes education in scripture and tradition, providing opportunities for people of all ages to serve God and the church through participation in worship, teaching, evangelism, and outreach. The materials used reflect who we are as Presbyterian Christians.

This classic tradition of musical excellence at First Presbyterian is an important part of our identity as a Christian community. It has helped and enabled the church to grow both in strength and effectiveness and stands as a beacon of quality and integrity in the Nashville area.

Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. —Ephesians 5:19-20 NRSV

Children & Music

The experience of worshiping Jesus Christ through music is a lasting gift that sticks with children into adulthood. As our children learn musical skills in choir, they also form friendships, learn church music traditions, and build courage to present their talents to each other and the larger church body.

Children's Choir (Ages 4 through 6th grade)

All four-year-olds through sixth graders are invited to join the Children's Choir! We convene seasonally, allowing families to opt in or out as schedules permit. The Choir typically practices for four weeks prior to participating in a worship service. Rehearsals typically occur over four weeks following the 11:00 a.m. service, with lunch provided as part of the rehearsal. Children's Choir learns a song to share with the congregation as a part of the worship service, regularly participating in special services, such as Christmas pageants, Palm Sunday, and Mother's Day. Led by Kevin Salter and Kelly Posey, the Children's Choir is an excellent opportunity for children to lead congregational worship in song.

Musikgarten (Ages 0–3)

Parents are invited to bring their babies and toddlers (newborn through age 3 1/2 years old) for music classes at First Presbyterian Church.  Musikgarten classes are 30-45 minutes long. Parents will learn how to play musically with their baby/toddler through bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, and other fun activities. You’ll sing, chant, move, dance, listen, and play simple instruments together. Led by Kelly Posey, classes are also an excellent time for parents to meet each other.

Music Academy

FPC’s Music Academy offers vocal and instrumental lessons to allow our younger disciples and adults to explore their God-given artistic gifts in voice, violin, harp, piano, organ, and guitar. Our music instruction meets a standard of excellence that inspires students to learn, grow, and serve with their gifts to the glory of God alone.
