Dr. Rusty Douglas Returns to FPC as Pastor-in-Residence

Monday, March 3 through Tuesday, April 22

We are pleased to share that Dr. Rusty Douglas is returning to First Presbyterian Church as the Pastor-in-Residence from Monday, March 3 through Tuesday, April 22. As a former pastor at FPC (1989–1993), Dr. Douglas brings a wealth of experience, insight, and leadership to this role and will teach, preach, and serve our church throughout the Lenten season. He and his wife Betty, will reside in the Tyne house thanks to the efforts of our volunteer team who have been restoring the property over the past few months.

Dr. Douglas’s presence reflects the church’s commitment to fostering spiritual growth, community building, and theological exploration. We warmly welcome Dr. Douglas and look forward to the blessings his leadership will bring this spring.

Join us for a cozy evening of fellowship, dessert, and discussion during Lent. Rusty will lead a discussion on John Newton, the writer of Amazing Grace. This gathering will be offered six times, and is limited to 20 people per gathering. Since the content is the same for each gathering, you only need to attend once.

Presentation and Discussion: The Great Dechurching

Tuesday, March 25 | 9:00-10:00 a.m. | Session Room

Join the church staff for a thoughtful presentation and discussion on The Great Dechurching: Who’s Leaving, Why Are They Going, and What Will It Take to Bring Them Back? by Jim Davis, Michael Graham, and Ryan P. Burge. We will explore the cultural and spiritual shifts behind church decline and what can be done to reconnect with those who have left. Church officers will also have a chance to hear this presentation on Saturday, March 22.

About Rusty Douglas

Dr. Rusty Douglas served as Senior Associate Pastor of First Presbyterian of Nashville from 1989–1993. In this role, he preached monthly, coordinated the nursery, children, youth, and adult education staff, taught the Bethel Bible Series, conducted officer training, and organized the initial Mexico mission trip. He also served at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, MS, for 22 years. Upon his retirement, FPC Greenwood named him Pastor Emeritus. Rusty and his wife, Betty, retired to Montreat, NC, in 2020. They have two children and three grandchildren. Rusty still enjoys playing golf, is reading through John Calvin’s commentaries in retirement, and serves on the board of the Presbyterian Heritage Center in Montreat. While serving as Pastor-in-Residence at FPC, he and Betty will be residing in the newly renovated Tyne House.
