6th Grade Confirmation Journey

Confirmation

6th grade Confirmation is a year-long process to a public profession of faith and accept the responsibility of life in the church.

What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is the process by which those who have been baptized as children to make a public profession of faith and accept the responsibility of life in the church. They are instructed in the faith, examined by the session, received as active members, and presented to the congregation in public worship. Additionally, Confirmation is the primary offering for 6th graders during the Sunday School Education Hour. Whether this class is a way to get to know First Presbyterian better or a confirmand plans to profess faith and join the church, we are delighted to have each confirmand, whatever their path, on the Confirmation journey.

Why do Confirmation?

It is an opportunity to explore the faith deeply and respond to God’s call on your life. We give 6th graders a year to explore by diving deeply into the faith and scripture, throwing monthly parties with lots of peers and friends, emphasizing participation and leadership in worship, service in and outside of the church, and attending an overnight retreat. The culmination of this experience is a chance to profess their faith to an elder of the church and become a member of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville.

Curriculum

We use the New City Catechism Curriculum for Confirmation. Catechism is a long-used tool of the Church to help people learn complex truths of Scripture. Catechisms are questions and answers that explain Biblical truths in an accessible, easy-to-learn way. New City Catechism uses more modern language in 52 questions that are perfect for children and adults. The app, songs, family prayers and devotions can all be added to family devotional life at home, as well as support and aid teaching during the Confirmation year!
